Composer, arranger and performer Michael Pignéguy returns to WA for a short visit at the end of this month following 4 years in Middle East.
His time in Dubai and neighbouring UAE capital, Abu Dhabi have seen him explore a range of musical roles. These vary from assistant musical director for the UAE Philharmonic Orchestra, media composer, member of the region’s foremost jazz group, The Dwight Dickerson Quartet as well as creating a solo project under the name of The Sound Sculptor.
Michael has also been in regular demand for his orchestral arranging abilities in Australia. Since his departure he has translated songs for artists such as Ben Folds, Ben Lee, The Panics, Augie March and the Idea of North. In the case of Ben Folds these arrangements have been performed by many of Australia’s state orchestras and over a dozen orchestras in the US.
His musical palette has been expanded by exposure to music from the region and has led to soundtrack commissions for projects ranging from the Emirati short film, ‘Once’ through to larger scale projects such as the CNN documentary, ‘The Last Nazi Hunter’.
Michael has also performed with leading artists such as Ziad Rahbani (son of legendary Lebanese musical doyen Fairuz), Dubai based Jordanian artist Kamal Mussalam and the amazing Syrian singer Rasha Rizk.
This PJS performance is a reunion of sorts for Michael’s jazz sextet (MPS) and coincides with the return home of trombonist Chris Greive who has been based in the UK for a number of years. The MPS recorded it’s debut album ‘Live’ at the well known Greenwich club and followed up with a double album ‘Pure’ featuring and co-produced by east coast saxophonist Dale Barlow.
He is looking forward to performing with MPS - one of WA’s most outstanding jazz ensembles and his colleagues once again: Peter Jeavons (bass), Carl Mackey (saxophone), Chris Grieve (trombone), Russell Holmes (piano) and Ricki Malet (trumpet).
