"Although I had known the individual members of The Necks, particularly bassist Lloyd Swanton, for many years it was not until I saw the controversial play and then the film, ‘The Boys’ that I truly experienced the mesmeric sounds of The Necks.
Virtuoso players in their own right, Chris Abrahams, piano, Tony Buck, drums and Lloyd Swanton – The Necks created a niche that is now a torrent and is continually being embraced by both International and Australian audiences. Individually they come from of a wide spectrum of contemporary jazz backgrounds from soul grooves and hard bebop to their own form of instantationalism - prodding, provoking and always interesting." (Helen Matthews)
These talented musicians conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, their music stand up to re-listening time and time again.
One of the great cult bands of Australia, the deceptive simplicity of The Necks' music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.
