THE GRID is a new moniker for three artists – Ben Vanderwal (drums), Dane Alderson (bass) and Tim Jago (guitar) – who have been playing regularly together for the past few months. The trio have been determined to seek a unique way of expressing their collective musical ideals and they have hit upon an energetic mix of mature understatement and sensitivity, driven at times with unrelenting force and bravado. Although making strong reference to guitar trio tradition, The Grid are unfettered by stylistic rulings. The result is an open, exciting level of unpredictability in their music. To be sure, you will experience musicality of the highest level with this team of Australia’s finest.
Maybe it’s just a little premature – but if the name wasn’t taken, Cream might have been fitting, because these individual’s talents are heading for ‘supergroup‘ status.
Tim
Tim Jago is one of the country’s most talented guitarists. He has performed all through the state, is a regular member of the Mace Francis Orchestra and leads many of his own projects. He has recently returned from a study trip in New York where he had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the best jazz musicians in the world.
Ben
Ben Vanderwal, one of Australia’s ‘first call’ drummers, has worked with some of the most illustrious names in recent jazz history including Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Howard Levy and George Garzone. He is a regular contributor to many of Australia’s leading ensembles.
Dane
Dane Alderson is one of the country’s finest electric bass players. Having won various prestigious awards at an early age, he was a key member in the renowned groups K, Void, and most recently Sly.
At just 19 Dane was a James Morrison scholarship winner – and today plays regularly with the man himself.
Don’t miss this outstanding homegrown talent because these guys are destined to go places.
