Paul has been a freelance saxophone, flute and clarinet player and arranger for more than 25 years. His love of jazz and blues music started from listening to his father’s Frank Sinatra and Count Basie record collection and in his mid teens began playing sax in blues and big band ensembles. In the late 70’s he joined Perth jazz fusion group Manteca for which he performed and arranged.
In the early 80’s he studied at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney NSW Jazz Diploma course with Don Burrows and Roger Frampton and played in Sydney for the next 7 years returning to Perth to further pursue performing, writing and teaching music.
Backing legends
Throughout his career he has backed many great performers including the legendary Ray Charles and Sammy Davis Jr and played in the ‘pit’ for musical productions such as Chicago and The Boy From Oz. He has also been active as a music arranger and composer for studio sessions, orchestras, jazz singers and original music for his own quartet and various other ensemble projects.
PJS is delighted that Paul has taken the opportunity to play for us again with an evening of swinging jazz standards, latin and blues favourites and some of his original compositions. He has assembled a group of highly respected musicians with Mike Nelson (Piano), Rob Pisano (Bass) and Glen Walsh (Drums) and featuring very special guest singer, Annie Neil.
