WAYJO THREE BIG BANDS
It’s a super year for sax talent at WAYJO! Here’s a sensational chance to catch all three WAYJO bands and hear the sassy solos of Perth’s newest jazz stars.
WAYJO is one of Australia’s cultural gems, the only youth jazz orchestra of its kind in the country. It provides a unique experience for jazz musicians aged 14 to 25 who are the absolute cream of young jazz players in the state. Competition for places is fierce, with hundreds of young musicians trying out every year. Those who make it are really amongst the best young players in WA and are rewarded with career-defining experiences – touring, training and performing with world-class guest artists.
WAYJO is unique – a hothouse for Australia’s young jazz musicians that is a bridge from aspiring school musician to professional working musician.
Three WAYJO ensembles will perform for PJS.
The Jazz Orchestra
The Jazz Orchestra is WAYJO's premiere ensemble, playing a variety of big band styles from the swing era to contemporary jazz. The focus is on presenting modern Australian composers including a programme to promote local WA emerging composers.
Featured Australian composers include Graeme Lyall, James Morrison, Julian Lee, Mace Francis, Daryl McKenzie, Grant Windsor, Michael Wallace, Daniel Thorne and Tilman Robinson. International modern jazz composers include Bob Brookmeyer, Ed Partyka and Maria Schneider
Big Band
The WAYJO Big Band presents big band music in the style of the 1950s and 60s brass sounds with a swing feel. Count Basie and Duke Ellington classics are performed along with music from Thad Jones, Bill Holman, Gordon Goodwin and Bob Mintzer.
Swing Band
Swinging its way through early jazz tunes from the swing era, the WAYJO Swing Band takes its repertoire from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Sy Oliver, Fletcher Henderson and Tommy Dorsey. Perfect for dancing, this band of young jazz musicians is the future of jazz in WA.
WAYJO Graduates
WAYJO graduates have taken the music world by storm and pop up in touring rock, pop, jazz and musical stage show bands across the globe. In 2008 musicians from WAYJO played in the Dancing with Stars house band (Jordan Murray trombone), toured in Kylie Minogue's X2008 show (Graeme Blevins saxophone), toured with James Morrison (Troy Roberts saxophone) and toured with Kate Ceberano (Jamie Oehlers saxophone, also named Head of Jazz at WAAPA this year).
