DANGEROUS CURVES
JGSWA celebrate 25 years
of performance at PJS
Dangerous Curves? Google it: plenty of websites for sex clubs, clothes, a female singing trio, body wraps, models, a great photo of a female motorcycle club and reference to a thriller movie. Unfortunately Ian MacGregor of JGSWA gave us no clues.
Well-famed JGSWA member and 400-metres sprinter Garry Lee knows all about fast bends.
But - I'm guessing - these virtuosi are suggesting those seductive curves of the electro-acoustic are a trap for learners.
FOUR of Perth's leading jazz guitarists follow the history of the guitar in jazz, from Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian up to the current top crop of players. The acoustic guitar and banjo featured prominently in most early jazz rhythm sections. Amplification, in the early 1940s, opened a new `voice' in jazz. Electric-guitarists playing single line solos joined traditional front-line instruments such as the trumpet and saxophone.
You will hear Ray Walker, Freddie Grigson, Simon Jeans and Tim Jago with a top flight rhythm section - Mark Fitzgibbon (keyboards), Carl Florisson (bass), Daniel Susnjar (drums). This will be a feast of styles and sounds for all jazz lovers.
Ray Walker
One of Perth's leading professional guitarists, with a career spanning more than 35 years, Ray has performed in duo format with Martin Taylor, Peter Leitch, Gary Potter, John Pisano and the late Emily Remler, along with many other international artists who have visited Perth.
A veteran of literally thousands of recording sessions for radio and TV, he has also been on the jazz staff of the Conservatorium of Music at WAAPA since the jazz programme began in 1984.
Freddie Grigson
A professional musician for the last 25 years and currently lecturing in the Jazz and Contemporary programmes at WAAPA, Freddie is one of Australia's most versatile and in-demand guitar players. Over the years his virtuosity has built his reputation as a melodic improviser of the first order whose own voice always rings true no matter the genre.
Simon Jeans
Simon has been continually been active as a freelance musician, band leader, band member and teacher since graduating in 1994 from the BMus Jazz course at WAAPA. Along with Tim Jago he was one of ten finalists in 2007 Wangaratta National Jazz Awards. Leader of (.....mumblefunk) thumpR, SJ Trio, Simon also performs, records and tours with acts such as Salamander, Michael Pigneguy Sextet, Thrust, Hip Mo' Toast big band, Sian Brown and Frames of Minds.
Tim Jago
After graduating from high school Tim completed a three year Advanced Diploma of Contemporary Music at WAAPA on his principle instrument, the guitar. He completed a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance (2006), was awarded the Melville Toyota Scholarship for the most outstanding final year jazz student, and was a 2007 finalist at Wangaratta. Throughout his study, Tim has performed around Perth with various groups ranging from original and covers bands, to many different jazz ensembles. He has also played in numerous shows and musicals, as well as teaching guitar on a part time basis, most recently at WAAPA. He has played with the Mat Jodrell quartet, and the MFO, as well as leading his own groups.
