The PJS kicks off 2009 with a bang with one of Perth’s most popular and enduring jazz groups, the Carl Mackey Quintet.
Over the last 2 decades Carl has built a reputation as one of Western Australia’s most energetic and exciting sax players, performing with some of Perth’s leading groups including Speedball, Spur, Sly, MPS and in various outings under his own name.
Carl’s ease with a range of musical styles has seen him move outside the jazz genre to perform rock, R & B, blues, soul, funk and reggae and he has recorded with artists as diverse as Dale Barlow, Trilok Gurtu, A2Z Reggae and Steve Tallis.
A James Morrison Scholarship Finalist in ‘89 and ‘90, Carl picked up the award for Most Outstanding Soloist at the Jazz Australia Showcase in 1994 and in 2004 his quintet was named Most Outstanding Jazz Group by the Perth Jazz Society.
To perform a concert of his original works and repertoire from leading contemporaries, Carl has assembled a phenomenally talented bunch of musicians from near and far, including ex-pats Tom O’Halloran(Sydney) on piano and Daniel Susnjar(Miami) on drums.
Throw into the mix 2008 Wangaratta Bass Finalist Pete Jeavons and 2007 Wangaratta Guitar Finalist Simon Jeans and you have a potent blend of creativity and spirit!
Join us for the start of another year of exciting jazz!
“…culminating in a heartbreaking and relentlessly emotional solo by Mackey, who on any of his saxes, displays a lyrical and technical competence that is top of the line.” Rick Culver JazzRadio247
