AROUND THE JAZZ WORLD IN ONE DAY

FROM NEW ORLEANS TO CHICAGO - Stevedores Jazz Band
The Everlasting Jazz Picnic day will start off with some of the finest Traditional Jazz musicians in WA – Stevedores Jazz Band creating the New Orleans sounds of the early 20th Century – from Jelly Roll Morton to the revolutionary playing of a young man called, Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong. They will then move up north to Chicago, that became a major jazz city in the mid 20s when New Orleans musicians found their way north after clubs in the Storyville area of New Orleans were closed down.
Jazz began to gain wider notice as recordings made in the ‘Windy City’ sold throughout America and Chicago and also became a magnet for musicians from the Mid-West. Famous musicians who received acclaim for their work in Chicago were Earl Hines, Johnny Dodds, Louis Armstrong and King Oliver.

DANGEROUS CURVES – Jazz and Blues Guitar Journey
Join three outstanding jazz guitarists, Ray Walker, Simon Jeans and Freddie Grigson along with a roaring rhythm section, as they pay homage to the formidable Delta blues men of the past and the genius of jazz guitar legends such as Wes Montgomery. Their individual guitar skills will also extend through to the swinging and fusion sounds of Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, George Benson, John Scofield and other jazz guitar greats.

GRAHAM WOOD QUARTET – New York to LA
The quartet will play its way through the New York Harlem scene, with the music of Duke Ellington before heading down to ‘Tin Pan Alley’ to select some of the great Jazz Standards that came from that era. In the late forties a new generation of musicians started to explore a different version of swing that would eventually be called bebop and the legendary Thelonius Monk was in the thick of it.
A young American jazz pianist called Herbie Hancock soon set his own standard, as will this outstanding quartet – Graham Wood, piano, Jamie Oehlers, tenor sax, Ben Vanderwal, drums and Nick Abbey on bass.

JOHANNES LUEBBERS DECTET – Made in Australia
Winner of the 2009 Youth Arts WA Citizen of the Year and the coveted APRA ‘Best Australian Jazz Song of the Year’ at the 2009 Australian Jazz ‘Bell’ Awards, Johannes Luebbers graduated from the WA Academy of Performing Arts in 2006, completing a BMus (Honours), majoring in jazz arranging and composition. A prime example of one of Australia’s new generation of outstanding musicians and composers dedicated to Australian music.

Johannes’ hand picked ensemble will include outstanding jazz and classical musicians Emily Thomas (flute), Steph Nicholls (oboe), Ben Collins (alto sax), Sean Little ( tenor sax), Callum G'Froerer (trumpet), Doree Dixon (horn), Tilman Robinson (trombone), Nick Abbey (bass) and Ben Falle (drums).
